Interview with Lesa McKee
Lesa McKee is a light-hearted Indie author whose Operation Space Cats reminds me a bit of the Gin & Tonic mysteries by one of my absolute favorite authors, Laura Anne Gilman
You write fantasy. Are there any other genres you would like to write?
I like blending genres. Sci-fi fantasy for one as you can tell with my Operation Space Cats series. I’d also like to write a Middle Grade Island adventure book. No sci-fi, no fantasy, just adventure, with maybe a more serious/dramatic tone which is SO unlike me. An original fairy-tale would be fun to write!
I’m also planning to tackle a Christian historical romance novella series, ‘Bridal Falls’ in the future. Yep! I’m all over the place with genres.
What makes your series of books, Operation Space Cats, stand out from the crowd?
I think it’s sometimes hard for parents to find just the right books for their kids, especially if they want a message of faith weaved into the fun.
The space crew to the rescue! Operation Space Cats is not only a series for older kids to read on their own, but parents will be smiling along reading these adventures to their younger kiddos, enjoying the space ride for themselves.
That sounds exciting! How do you work with a cast of seven cat characters, though?
Very clawfully!:) Really, though, I try to make each cat unique in looks and personality so they stand out.
Tebbs is the faithful leader, Kibby is his fluffy & sweet sis, Dax is her charming beau, Cavias walks with a limp, and is old and cantankerous, Spreet is a fiesty street cat, Razzie is a (trying to be) brave runt, and Farlo is a portly far-out 80’s cat.
Do you have any other creative outlets besides writing?
Yes. I’m a songwriter, and a bit of a poet, which I believe are different kinds of writing. I also love any kind of designing. House, yard, book covers, etc. I’m into flower & container gardening. I have some beautiful flower beds out front, and our home is a lovely work-in-progress. Recently I’ve taken up drawing, and I love it!
I’m jealous! Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
I’m a total introvert! Being alone is never lonely. But I’m glad I can still write extrovert characters.
About Lesa McKee
Lesa McKee grew up at her Grandmother’s knee, listening to the French folk-tales her animated Grandma Ida shared. A love of stories was born and her imagination took off!
